Berlin Meets USA: the Power of the American Digital Platform

Expanding & Launching Profitable Digital Products & Services on the American Market (and beyond) with a Digital Platform Strategy.

Tech Open Air Satellite Event and 2nd Edition of “Berlin Meets USA” on transatlantic business expansion is going to delve deeper into the topic and concentrate on one of fastest growing markets for digital platforms, the United States.

Within the last 15 years, the Internet has developed an unprecedented global marketplace. According to the recent McKinsey study, global online traffic across borders grew 18-fold between 2005 and 2012, and could increase eightfold more by 2025. Digital innovations, which reduce the cost of production and distribution, are changing capital flows in the two following ways: through the creation of purely digital goods and services and digital platforms that facilitate cross-border production and exchange. New evidence shows that companies adapting ‘offensive corporate strategy’ and reallocating resources to innovative digital models experience increase of revenue and growth within the first 3 years in opposite to companies applying “defensive strategy” (McKinsey).

America’s market size, purchasing power, advanced technologies and popularity of using online platforms to purchase, sell, book, exchange goods and services make it a powerful hotspot for growth-oriented digital platforms. The number of e-customers in the US has been estimated for over 210 milion in 2018 and it keeps upward trend, which is expected to reach over 230 milion users by 2021. Thus, creating a huge opportunity for European digital platform businesses to increase their online footprint.

Attendees of the event will come away with knowledge on how to analyse and comprehend American e-market, receive the most significant information related to digital platform business expansion to USA and will have the opportunity to create valuable partnerships between digital platforms specialists, successful online companies, developers, investors, international marketing agencies and organizations encouraging economic development growth in USA.

This event aims to answer the following questions: What are the available tools to make the digital platform expansion process more managable? What are the key steps to launch profitable digital products in the dynamic US market? What are the most important legal factors to consider while targeting transatlantic Online marketplace? How to create and manage marketing campaings to attract American e-customers? How to develop successful digital platform strategy to expand globally?

Improving productivity of remote software developers: tips & tricks.

I’m a software developer with almost 15 years of professional experience. Most of the time I work remotely. Throughout all these years I saw common mistakes that CTOs typically make when hiring and managing remote developers. These mistakes impact developer productivity and create frustrations both for them and for the engineers they manage.

I will host a workshop to share what I learned and help tech leaders become more efficient.

We will talk about how to adapt development process for remote work, how to avoid hiring mistakes, how to handle conflict situations, and how to build great team spirit.

This knowledge will be helpful for CTOs and product managers who manage or plan to manage remote software developers.

Did you know that already in 2020 customer experience is predicted to be the key differentiator for your brand? However, in reality, the experience customers make is often far from satisfactory, increasing the risk to lose customers at a large scale. For this reason, it is time to take action! As largest customer service provider in Germany for national and international players of all sizes, e.g. in the IT-High Tech, Telecommunication and eCommerce industry, we invite you to deep-dive into an interactive masterclass that sheds light on what customer experience actually is, why it is increasingly relevant and how your company can make sure to deliver best-in-class experiences across the entire customer journey. Data Science: The art of the possible, or technological solutionism?

In the midst of digitalisation, data science, according to some mediums, emerged as a discipline that is expanding the boundaries of the possible for many businesses. On the other hand, however, there is a rising critique that this discipline merely offers facile technological solutions to complex economic challenges. In order to shed light on this debate, BIG PICTURE GmbH creates a panel for an open discussion among the experts of data science discipline; and allows them to review the new possibilities and unrealistic assumptions that exist towards the data science discipline. The moderated panel discussion will be followed by the second part of the event, when the participants will be given a possibility to interact with the panellists in the Q/A session. A networking part of the satellite event will conclude the meeting.

AI and Play: The Future of Creativity

This event will take a look at recent developments in the broad field of AI and creativity. How does technological advances impact the world of art, music, photography and television? What impact will AI have on the creative life of Berlin? What future do we want to create together, and how ‘human’ does art need to be to feel authentic? We will explore these questions and more through an interactive panel and audience debate, including speakers from the Berlin-based company Melodrive, and artwork from “We Need To Talk, AI.”

Party Boat with Tech Luminaries of Silicon Valley, Burning Man, and Pioneers of Cannabis

We invite you to get on Berlin’s most notorious party boat and hang with a crowd of tech visionaries, artists and like-minded entrepreneurs from around the globe for three hours of dancing, mingling, and experimenting.
Be among the first to discover the creation of a new kind of company, incubated under the FutureScape umbrella by a team of thought leaders that brought some of the most cutting-edge products to life such as Waymo, SpaceX, and HoloLens. How will this new company lead a paradigm shift in human health through innovation and science? How does our understanding of feeling good feed into our well-being? How can we truly hack our bodies and take control of our most precious commodity? Come and experiment with us on the boat!
We will set sail at 19:00 PM in Kreuzberg and make our way to our final destination, the Funkhaus, to join the official TOA party around 20:00. We will be docked there and continue to party on the boat for a few hours until 22:30.

Transmodernity - In Times of Transition

The experimental documentary TRANSMODERNITY (2019) kicks off a new platform and network dedicated to the art of changemaking!

We start off with a screening of the film (98 mins, w German & English subtitles), as it raises the question of how reality can be possible in a different way – and seeks out positive blueprints for our present and future. It is a portrait of our time and its currents, created by a mosaic of ten different changemakers and their projects across Europe. These include activists, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and social workers amongst others. Although at first glance, they may seem unrelated, they are connected by their exploration of meaning through a shared vision of a fundamental socio-cultural change. It becomes apparent that every single one of us has the power to contribute to this transformation, in which values such as solidarity, sustainability and spirituality without the dogma are encouraged – by starting from our imagination.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A with the directors Luisa Dahringer and Halea Isabelle Kala – as well as a cocreation session for their platform that aims to globally connect and inspire changemakers across the disciplines.

New Work: Work in Times of the Subscription Economy

Unicorn Workspaces is a Berlin-based shared office provider. “Workspace as a Service” is our motto and our mission is to provide affordable workspaces for businesses and individuals while remaining as sustainable as possible. With a total of twelve locations, we are the provider with the most workspaces in the German capital. And that’s not quite it: this spring two spaces opened in Lisbon and further spaces in Potsdam, Cologne and Munich will follow this year.

As we grow we see that our coworkers have a demand for well-balanced work environments where they move between “get shit done” and “get inspired”. As a young and growing provider this is a topic that is highly important to us, which is why we want to take the opportunity of hosting a TOA 2019 satellite event that deals with the issue of “Work in times of the subscription economy”. From this point of view, we invite speakers and experts from the digital and start-up scene to discuss with us how the subscription economy affects all work related things and in specific how workspaces can contribute to a well-balanced work-life in the years to come.

    Future of Online Privacy

From identity theft and credit fraud to creepy online advertising, 21st century life on the web often leaves us protesting for a safer digital environment. Serious hacks regularly hit organizations and institutions, both public and private, rendering massive sets of sensitive, personal data vulnerable to exploit.

In an era when proliferation of personal data is the status quo, online privacy is a concern for each and every user on the web. (Not convinced your data has been exposed in one of these larger attacks? Check here to see where you’ve been pwned.)

So to foster better privacy practices among users while advancing awareness of online surveillance technologies, we’ve gathered a group of professionals working in digital security to share their expertise and wisdom on data protection in brief presentations followed by open, small group discussions or workshops.

In addition to discussing perspectives on the future of online privacy and what privacy-enhancing technologies are on the horizon, they’ll share tactics & tips for preserving privacy on the web today.

So join us on July 4th for this Tech Open Air Satellite Event on the Betahaus Kreuzberg rooftop and follow our expert foray into online privacy – its current state, how you can protect yourself, and future solutions.

** Improvisational Groove Orchestra (I.G.O.) – a fun way to experience authentic connection and community through exploring a commonly created sound space. (description & links to examples below)

I.G.O. Thursday Meditative Vocal Jam Sessions @ Baumhaus

We meet every Thursday to listen, respond, observe and curiously play with the sounds our voices create together. Our objective is to tune into the common feeling we are developing in the present moment.

Most of what we do is with our eyes closed. This allows everyone to be very focused on only the sound space without any other distractions. We usually are more beginners than experienced singers, and that’s absolutely fine. It is a learning process in progress, each time balancing ourselves in volume and expression to merge into the group sound space, allowing everyone to hear and be heard, naturally developing our own musical styles.

All levels and voice types are welcome! Just make sure to be on time: Scott will explain a few basic and intuitively understandable concepts to make it super easy to dive in for everyone.

We Can StartUp - Fostering Female Entrepreneurship

Facts are facts. As of today, only 15% of startups in Berlin are founded by women. Studies have shown that this inequality also reflects on the number and amount of funding female founders receive in the startup space. A scarcity that reflects on the number of role models as well. Less women, less funding, less role models, less women. A circle that feeds itself.

Since March 2018, The Place is actively engaged in supporting female entrepreneurs with the We Can StartUp series of event: a stage, a pitch competition with 10 hand picked & women-led startups, a fierce jury giving insightful feedback. It’s also a unique platform chance to learn more about the new practices in place to reduce this gap.

Cherry on top: At the end of the event, the winning team gets the chance to integrate in our community for free for 3 months (meaning free desks, accessing all events and mentors from our network), and receive a Female Fellowship to Founder Institute program, meaning free 3.5 months of acceleration with top notch mentors to take your business to the new level.

The Place Berlin & Tech Open Air Satellites partner with Founder Institute and the German Startup Association to give YOU the opportunity to network around the topic and pick the brains of a few of Berlin’s top experts by hosting a short panel discussion followed by Q&A with the audience. Join us with all your questions for an evening of learning, discussion and debate!

Calling all female entrepreneurs! This is a chance to pitch your idea in front an incredible crowd: media, talents, potential investors, curious minds that will challenge you to push forward. Please submit your pitch deck to hallo@theplaceberlin.com with the title “We Can StartUp Submission” before June 20th. 10 teams will be selected to pitch on stage. This edition is open to all verticals; however we’ll invite on stage only teams seed to early stage with a developed idea and who can demonstrate they’ve proven their product market-fit. Jury will be announced soon.

Same Same But Different – Berlin as the Social Innovation Hub

We face a multitude of social challenges. Climate change, child and old-age poverty, no fundamental reforms in the education system, the integration of refugees or demographic change are just a few examples. Instead of meeting these challenges in a sustainable way at their core causes, the symptoms are often met with tools from the past century. Thus potentials are wasted and fundamental social improvements are rarely brought about. With all the social challenges of our time, there must be another demand here.

Social entrepreneurs bring exactly this claim with them and approach our social challenges holistically with innovative and future-oriented solutions.

With our event we want to introduce to you some of these entrepreneurs whose organisations enable a new form of economic activity: communal, democratic and fair.

    Inclusive Voices Workshop

An unconscious bias and inclusivity training on the importance of integration of diversity in the workplace.

There is plenty of imperial evidence which states that diversity is vital for business success. According to a recent McKinsey report companies in the top-quartile for gender diversity on their executive teams are 21% more likely to have higher profitability, and ethnic/cultural diversity are 33% more likely to outperform on profitability. Nevertheless, organisations can only benefit from the positive impact of diversity when all the employees feel that they are treated fairly, that their uniqueness is appreciated and they have a sense of belonging. Inclusive business culture is what drives innovation and bottom line results.

To create a well-balanced inclusive workplace culture, we have to start with our minds and our perceptions. It is important to challenge any conscious stereotypes, prejudices or unconscious biases that might prevent us from evaluating people based on their merits and talents, rather than our preconceptions.

While the tech sector is one of the most forward leading sectors in business, it remains highly homogenous. In order to create a socially sustainable future as well as a competitive market, this industry needs to have diversity and inclusion on top of their agenda.

Equality Group presents Inclusive Voices, which is a collaborative training workshop that enables the participants to learn about various biases, raise their level of self-awareness and encourages to practice a more inclusive mindset. An hour workshop will consist of a short presentation on conscious and unconscious biases, practical awareness and mindfulness exercises as well as group discussion. It will be a safe and informal session where the participants will be allowed to ask any questions, encouraged to participate and share their own experiences.

Ethics in a Moment of Crisis: What is Tech’s Role?

We live in a moment characterized by acceleration. Accelerated innovation amidst accelerated crisis. How the two interact is of critical importance. And tech leaves increasingly outsized fingerprints on the outcomes. If we understand users as actual people impacted by the world that results, how are we accountable to them? How are the histories and unconscious biases that shape us present in and even amplified by the technologies like AI and robotics? What role do privacy, democracy, and representation play in innovating digital and social media? And how do all three inform doing business in a moment that is anything but neutral?

Join us at Babbel’s Berlin HQ for a panel tackling these questions, featuring:

Christian Heilmann – Principal Program Manager @ Microsoft
Nehal Shah – Director of Engineering @ Babbel
    Hermione Flynn, CEO Mimic Productions

    Privacy & Identity Jam

At Authenteq we do electronic identity verification without compromising on security or privacy. That’s pretty hard, but also pretty darn cool. The process involves (buzzword warning!): machine learning, facial recognition, optical scanning, blockchain, NFC, native apps and even _the cloud_ (what doesn’t these days). Our experts will be on site to answer any questions you may have about us or how we do things and we’ll even throw in a few educational lightning talks. If for no other reason, then come to find out why many English people think Iceland is the largest banana grower in Europe and what that has to do with the potential pitfalls of machine learning. Also, there will be bratwurst and beer (it is Berlin, so this probably goes without saying).

    Made for Womxn By Womxn

    Who

This event will highlight womxn-made media and products and inspire ambition. It will be open to people* of all ages, experience, genders, and identities.

    What

The majority of this event will be centred around presentations and panel discussion. Allowing speakers to present themselves before the panel discussion is key, as this makes the speakers more accessible to the audience. This accessibility will lead to an enhanced panel discussion with audience questions. We will also speak about the gaps and misrepresentation that the classification of binary gender leads to in the products, services, and media that we consume.

Speakers Waridi Pabst, CEO Fashion Africa 254 Nancy Wang, CEO Advancing Women in Product Katy Campbell, APX‘s Nasty Women Melissa Drier, Women‘s Wear Daily

The presentations will provide the initial inspiration for the audience and show how passionate the speakers are about their fields of expertise. Following this, the speakers will participate in a panel and provide insight into their experience, and how this is unique to them as women*. The audience questions will break down the barrier between speakers and audience, which is perfect for the beginning of the networking segment.

    Why

“You can’t be what you can’t see.” This has a double meaning in this event. Firstly, the audience will be inspired and gain the confidence to pursue their ambitions as creative women*. Secondly, the best products and services for women will be made, tested, and invented by those who personally experience the benefits of the existence of this product. At this SoGal event, we want to inspire women to be at the core of products to make them great for everyone- especially for women.
